How to start a bike train in Manchester
Cycling is a great way to get around in Manchester, whether for commuting, school runs, or just for fun. But let's be honest - navigating busy roads solo can sometimes feel a bit daunting. Enter the Bike Train: a super simple, safe, and social way to cycle together and boost confidence on the road. On top of being great for you, cycling is a great way to reduce air pollution in Manchester, the less cars on the roads the cleaner the air is for everyone!
So, what exactly is a Bike Train?
Think of a Bike Train like a regular train, but on two wheels. It follows a planned route, has scheduled “stops” where riders can hop on or off, and is led by experienced cyclists to keep things running smoothly. You might see them organised by schools, workplaces, or just groups of mates who want to ride together.
How Does it Work?
Pick a Route & Schedule
Choose a safe, cycle-friendly route with minimal traffic and set a timetable.
Join In Along the Way
Riders can meet at designated points, just like catching a train.
Ride Together
More experienced cyclists lead the way, setting a comfortable pace and keeping the group safe.
Enjoy the Perks
Safety in numbers, a social way to travel, and a confidence boost for new riders!
Who’s a Bike Train For?
Bike Trains are great for:
Parents & Kids – a fun, safe alternative to the school run.
Commuters – enjoy a stress-free, eco-friendly way to work.
Weekend Riders – perfect for weekend trips to the park, the countryside, or events.
Why Give It a Go?
There are loads of reasons to start or join a Bike Train:
Feel Safer – cars give more space to groups, and you’re more visible on the road.
Encourage Active Travel – it’s easier to commit to cycling when your part of a group.
Meet New People – whether it’s neighbours, colleagues, or fellow parents, cycling together builds community.
Help the Environment – less congestion, cleaner air—win-win!
Stay Active – cycling is great, low intensity exercise!
Want to Start Your Own?
Here’s how to get rolling:
Find Your Crew
Chat to colleagues, parents, or friends who’d be up for it.
Plan a Safe Route
Pick routes with cycle lanes and low traffic where possible. Consider things like routes with bicycle-friendly crossing locations where vehicle traffic is stop controlled (stop signs or traffic lights). Don’t be afraid to ask everyone to dismount to cross a road if you need to!
Set a Timetable
Agree on meeting points and times. Whether your bike train will meet at a central location or pick riders up along the route, a schedule and the ability to communicate any last-minute changes is essential. A ride WhatsApp group is a handy way to give live updates or even a live location (make sure you stop safely to use your phone though!). It’s worth considering how often your Bike Train will operate and if it’s a round trip or just one way too.
Choose Ride Leaders
More confident cyclists can help keep things on track and lead the Bike Train. It’s best if you have a group of people who are happy to lead so the responsibility can be shared out! At a minimum, bike trains require two leaders, one on the front and one at the back. For larger bike trains, a good rule of thumb is one adult for every 3 to 4 non leaders. If you’re short on confident cyclists Cycling Uk and TFGM offer Ride Leader Training Qualification. (need links)
Safety first!
Safety is the most important consideration in running a bike train, and when everyone feels safe, you’re more likely to have fun! You’ll need to consider safety ‘rules’ to differing amounts depending on who your Bike Train is for. For example, if your Bike Train is part of a school, you’ll need to consider things like the student cycling ability, caregiver’s permission, ground rules and safety equipment.
Spread the Word
Use social media, school newsletters, or workplace chats to get more riders involved.
