Manchester Urban Diggers Guide to Composting
One of the best ways to grow beautiful plants and veggies is to use the best growing medium, good compost = happy plants!
Making your own compost avoids the environmental impact of transportation, energy use and industrial processing that comes with shop bought compost. It also saves money and packaging, utilises surplus materials and nutrients and allows us to process our own waste, and create amazing peat-free compost!
Having a compost in your garden is also great for biodiversity, with many kinds of fungi and soil micro-organisms helping to break down the organic matter, while worms, woodlice, slugs and other invertebrates also feed on the decaying material. These creatures then provide food for birds, hedgehogs and other valuable wildlife!
There are many different ways to create compost that your plants will love but if you’re processing large amounts of waste using bays is a popular method!
