Here’s a bit more information about our Steering Group
What does the Steering Group do and who’s involved?
We’re a group of individuals from across Manchester who are working closely with In Our Nature to ensure community voices are represented, and to strengthen climate action locally.
You can find out more about us and our current members here.
Our work is varied and led by us as the groups’ members. Here’s some examples of what we’ve been involved in to-date:
Supporting the selection of community-led climate projects across the city
Inputting into city-wide consultations including Manchester Climate Ready: The Plan, and the Our Manchester Strategy
Encouraging networking and collaboration amongst community climate initiatives across Manchester
Conducting an Equality, Diversity & Inclusivity audit of the Steering Group and its activity
What’s in it for me?
By getting involved, you’ll have opportunities to:
Connect with other people who care and act for our climate and the environment
Support people to make positive changes in their own communities
Help to ensure that a diverse range of voices are included in the climate conversation
Access training opportunities
Your travel will be reimbursed and you will also receive a voucher for your time.
Here’s what a typical Steering Group meeting looks like, lots of collaboration, round-table discussions, breakout tasks and feedback!
Who is this opportunity for and what do you need from me?
We’re a welcoming, flexible group and no previous climate experience is needed to join, however local knowledge and care for the community are valued.
We understand that climate change affects us all differently, and that some people may be more vulnerable as a result. For this reason, this opportunity is focussing on people who experience or identify with any of the following:
coming from a low-income household or living with financial insecurity,
identifying with ethnically diverse communities,
living with a disability,
living with a chronic or long-term illness,
having carer responsibilities,
being an older individual.
We’re also really interested in hearing from applicants who are based in North Manchester (by that we mean people who live, work or study in Harpurhey, Miles Platting & Newton Heath, Clayton & Openshaw, Cheetham, Higher Blackley, Crumpsall and Charlestown), East Manchester (Gorton & Abbey Hey, Burnage and Levenshulme), and Wythenshawe.
If you wouldn’t normally apply to take part in an opportunity like this, we want to hear from you.
To join, we require that you are:
18 or over
Are currently living, working or studying in Manchester
That you are respectful and considerate of other people’s perspectives and opinions
Time requirements:
We host six meetings a year, typically every two-months, in person on a weekday evening at a city-centre location. The meetings are generally 1hr30m in length.
We understand that you may not be able to attend all meetings but will work with you to try and find dates and times that suit.
If the timing, location or format of meetings does not work for you, please tell us - we will try our best to accommodate access, travel, caring, work, language or confidence needs as much as possible.
There are also occasional tasks that might take place outside of meetings, this is kept light-touch and isn’t mandatory.
