Meet Unicorn Grocery: the Chorlton sustainable cooperative

Providing affordable, fresh and wholesome food is in their nature!

Corrina from Unicorn Grocery

Unicorn Grocery is a worker-owned cooperative based in Chorlton, south Manchester with a big focus on affordable, organic, "cooking-from-scratch" ingredients and fresh, wholesome, tasty food. Seasonal eating is at the heart of what they do.

What would you say are some of the benefits of local and seasonal food produce?

The food is so much tastier, fresher and sustainable! A huge benefit is that the food will be at its most nutrient dense and have the lowest environmental impact in terms of food mileage. It is often cheaper too so it is win-win all round really!

Another wonderful benefit of eating seasonally and locally, apart from the fact that the food tastes so good, is that it makes each season special and exciting, you look forward to the change of season and the new foods which will be available during that period.

What’s currently your favourite seasonal food dish?

I absolutely adore fresh Mediterranean flavours during the summer months. We are so fortunate that we have access to an abundance of UK-grown Mediterranean ingredients - courgettes, tomatoes, aubergines and peppers as well as fresh, fragrant summer herbs. Something simple like tomatoes on bruschetta with fresh basil and good olive oil is a winner for me.

If you had one tip for someone looking to get involved in climate action, what might that be?

My top tip would be to get involved with a local or regional group. There are so many groups out there so just find one that resonates with you and get involved! Climate Emergency MCR, Youth Strike for Manchester and Plan B are great groups that are supporting people with climate action.
